Internships
Newton Cemetery & Arboretum regularly employs interns from schools such as Minuteman Career and Technical High School and the University of Massachusetts. Summer internships are also available through the City of Newton Mayor’s Summer High School Internship Program, which serves as a hands-on summer learning experience for young adults in the community. Students have worked with our grounds staff, in our greenhouse, office and automotive shop. Newton Cemetery takes pride in playing a role in the education of young men and women in the industry.

Submit Volunteer Hours
If you have an interest in history or horticulture, volunteer positions occasionally arise at Newton Cemetery. Opportunities are organized through the Friends of Newton Cemetery and may involve working in the office or on the grounds with cemetery staff. Interested volunteers are encouraged to complete the Volunteer Application or contact the Friends of Newton Cemetery directly at 617-332-0047. For high school students, the Center for Civic Engagement and Service at Newton North High school lists volunteer opportunities specifically for students interested in volunteering at Newton Cemetery.
In addition to on-site volunteer opportunities, Newton Cemetery has assisted students and groups on projects related to their studies or interests in history, horticulture, preservation or archives management. Projects have included the creation of a hand bound book detailing the mausoleums at Newton Cemetery completed by a local college student studying archives management, and GPS tree tagging done by a local 4H club working with the Newton Cemetery arborist (the 4H’ers learned about trees while helping Newton Cemetery tag many of the tree specimens for the cemetery arboretum database).
Other Opportunities To Help
Event Volunteer
Volunteering for a tour or event requires only a few hours of time. If you have a passion for the mission of the Friends of Newton Cemetery and enjoy working with the public and Friends program participants, we would appreciate your help. Specific roles include staffing our event check-in table and volunteering at the semi-annual plant sale. If you are interested, please e-mail fonc@newcemcorp.org or complete and submit the Volunteer Application.
Projects
Civil War Soldiers Project:
A local 4H club was interested in mapping and history. They decided to combine these two interests and applied for a grant from ESRI to use ArcGIS software and created a story map about Civil War soldiers at Newton Cemetery.
“[Our club] decided to map the Civil War veterans to inform the public about the soldiers who died to protect the unity of our country. The Newton Cemetery alone holds 23 (as far as we know) soldiers who died as a consequence of injuries from the Civil War. We wanted to show all of the information in a way that is satisfactory to our viewers. In our map, it is easy to see all the information we collected. We hope that you enjoy learning about the brave soldiers that died to protect us.”
